Connect your volt meter across the resistor. If any current flows through the resistor, your volt meter will show a voltage. Start unplugging things until the voltage across the resistor drops to 0. If a 100 ohm resistor gets hot, try a smaller resistor, maybe 50 or 10 ohm. The equation V = IR, or voltage equals current times resistance.
